The terrorist, who was initially suspected of wearing an explosive belt, was shot and killed by police who were called to the scene. Eyewitnesses reported seeing a vehicle speeding toward a gathering outside the building. After ramming into the crowd, the driver exited the vehicle and began stabbing people nearby before being neutralized.

The terrorist behind the synagogue attack has been named as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, a Syrian Islamist handed British citizenship.

Chava Levin, a local resident, told British media:
“The moment he got out of the car, he started stabbing anyone near him. He approached the security guard and tried to break into the synagogue.”
According to her, “Someone blocked the door. Everyone is in total shock.”

Later, the Daily Mail reported that it was Rabbi Daniel Walker, head of the synagogue since 2008, who blocked the door.

“Rabbi Walker was incredibly calm,” Levin said. “He closed the doors and blocked the entrance. He’s a hero. It could have been much worse.”

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack, stating he was “shocked by the assault at the Crumpsall synagogue. The fact that this happened on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific.”

In a statement before departing for a flight, Starmer added:
“We will do everything to ensure the safety of the Jewish community. Police forces have been reinforced around synagogues across the country.”

King Charles also condemned the murderous attack, saying he was “shocked and deeply saddened.”

The Israeli Embassy in London also issued a statement condemning the attack, calling it a “despicable and deeply distressing incident.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the embassy added: “We are in close contact with the Jewish community in Manchester to ensure they receive all necessary support.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar responded to the attack, stating:
“I am horrified by the deadly attack on the morning of the holiest day for the Jewish people.”

He expressed condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded, adding: “I stand with the wonderful Jewish community of Britain, which is currently suffering from a horrific wave of antisemitism.”

Sa’ar criticized British authorities, saying:
“The authorities in the UK have failed to take the necessary action to stop this toxic wave of antisemitism and have, in effect, enabled it.”He added that “We expect more than words from the Starmer government, a change of direction, effective action, and enforcement against the rampant antisemitic and anti-Israel incitement in Britain.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir said:
“I send my condolences to the families of the victims in the terrible attack in Manchester. The UK, which in recent years has repeatedly chosen to embrace terrorists, protect them, and support them, received a brutal reminder today that those who empower terror will eventually face it within their own country.”

He added:
“It’s time for British leaders to wake up and understand what the citizens of Israel go through every day: terror does not discriminate between Israelis and Britons. Today it was against Jews; tomorrow, it will be the entire Western world.”
