Officer Sharjeel Waris and his partner were securing a crime scene at a building on 1046 Thomas S. Boyland Street when a man opened his apartment door and fired a shotgun at Waris from close range. The 25-year-old officer sustained facial injuries consistent with birdshot pellets.
Waris returned fire, striking the suspect. Emergency Services Unit officers subsequently entered the apartment and found the man dead inside with the shotgun nearby. Police said the suspect’s actions highlighted the unpredictable and dangerous situations officers face every day.
Today, we were once again reminded of what's at stake every time an NYPD officer puts on their uniform. Our officers never know what will be on the other side of a door, but whatever it is, they face it with an uncommon valor that defines this department.

Two other NYPD officers responding to the call were involved in a separate vehicle accident near the scene; both sustained minor injuries and were treated at the same hospital.
Chief Tisch praised Waris for his bravery, saying the situation “could have ended very differently” and emphasizing the constant risks faced by law enforcement. “This morning is a reminder of how quickly danger finds the women and men who protect this city,” she said. “They stood their ground, did their jobs, and kept people safe.”
Upon his release, Waris was greeted by a long line of saluting officers, underscoring the camaraderie and respect within the department.
