Officials say the man scaled a roughly six-meter wall, using a nearby tree to pull himself into the restricted area. Zoo staff shouted warnings but were unable to reach him before he entered the habitat.
The lioness attacked immediately. Emergency crews responded, but the man’s injuries were fatal and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The zoo was closed following the incident as security teams secured the area and investigators began reviewing how the breach occurred. City officials issued a statement expressing condolences to the man’s family and confirmed that the enclosure meets required safety standards, noting that the victim entered a clearly prohibited zone.
The lioness remained inside the habitat and did not need to be sedated. Veterinarians are monitoring her while authorities continue their investigation.
The incident has renewed concerns about visitor safety and the dangers of bypassing barriers in wildlife facilities.
