Adams, who hosted Mrs. Metal at Gracie Mansion and City Hall in 2023 to celebrate her 100th birthday, said her story left a lasting impact on him.
“We mourn the passing of Elza Metal at 102 — a Holocaust survivor who shared her story with me at City Hall when she turned 100,” the mayor wrote. “Her life was a testament to resilience, raising four generations right here in New York City.” He previously called her “a testament to strength and perseverance.”
Mrs. Metal passed away on Tuesday. She is survived by her husband, Arthur Schwartz; her sons, Rabbi Yeshaya Metal of Suffern, N.Y., and Dr. Israel Metal of West Hempstead, N.Y.; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
