Omar said the encounter occurred Saturday after her son made a stop at a retail store. She said agents released him after he produced his U.S. passport.
The Democratic congresswoman said her son routinely carries his passport. She added that federal agents had previously entered a mosque where her son and others were praying but left without incident.
Omar accused federal authorities of racial profiling, saying agents are targeting young men who appear Somali. She said she has warned her son to be cautious amid increased immigration enforcement activity in the Twin Cities.
On Friday, Omar said she sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and acting ICE Director Todd Lyons accusing agents of racial profiling and excessive use of force.
ICE has not publicly commented on the incident involving Omar’s son.
