Yanky Super, a Jewish emergency medical responder, was on duty at the Hanukkah celebration when gunfire erupted. As he rushed to assist the wounded, he was struck in the chest and back, suffering multiple bullet fragment injuries. A walkie-talkie-style emergency radio clipped to his vest stopped a direct shot from penetrating vital organs, 9News reported.
Rabbi Super remains hospitalized in intensive care at Royal North Shore Hospital, where he is recovering from his injuries.
Fellow Hatzolah responder Mendy Litzman told 9News Australia that the placement of the radio was critical, saying the device prevented what would have been a fatal wound and describing the survival as nothing short of miraculous.
Despite being wounded himself, Super continued assisting victims until he was evacuated for treatment, the report said.
Litzman also told 9News that the scene quickly descended into chaos, describing Bondi Beach as resembling a war zone as volunteers and bystanders worked to triage the injured and stop the bleeding amid ongoing danger.
During the attack, Litzman attempted to save another Hatzolah volunteer, Rabbi Eli Schlanger, who was critically wounded. Schlanger later died of his injuries and is among the 15 people killed when terrorists opened fire on the Jewish community gathering.
Authorities have since said the attack was motivated by Islamic State ideology, with investigations into the attackers ongoing.
