Trump opened his remarks on the third night of Hanukkah by addressing the shooting at Bondi Beach in Sydney, where a Jewish community event was targeted.
“Let me take a moment to send love and prayers to an entire nation, to the people of Australia, and especially to all those affected by the horrific and antisemitic terrorist attack,” Trump said.
“That’s exactly what it was — antisemitic — that took place during Hanukkah celebrations in Sydney. What a terrible, terrible thing,” he added.
The president said the United States was mourning those killed and praying for the wounded, noting that some victims suffered severe injuries. Trump went on to urge the international community to “stand together against the evil forces of radical Islamic terrorism,” framing the attack as part of a broader global threat to Jewish communities.
The White House event was attended by Jewish leaders, lawmakers and guests marking the Festival of Lights, which commemorates resilience and religious freedom.
