BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS (VINnews) — Israeli officials are reviewing intelligence suggesting a potential Iranian connection to the fatal shooting of Prof. Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a prominent Portuguese-born plasma physicist and director of MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center, according to a report Wednesday in The Jerusalem Post.

The assessment remains unverified and is not backed by any official U.S. investigative findings, the report noted.
Loureiro, 47, was shot multiple times at his home in this affluent Boston suburb Monday night. He was rushed to a hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead early Tuesday, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office said.
Brookline police and Massachusetts authorities have launched a homicide investigation. No arrests have been made, no suspects identified and no motive disclosed.
The Israeli inquiry comes amid Loureiro’s leadership in nuclear fusion research, a field with implications for advanced energy technologies. He was regarded as a leading expert in magnetized plasma dynamics and had held key positions at fusion research centers.
Loureiro, who joined MIT’s faculty in 2016 and became director of its Plasma Science and Fusion Center in 2024, was described by colleagues as a brilliant scientist and mentor. He previously worked at Portugal’s Institute for Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion.
MIT President Sally Kornbluth called his death a “shocking loss.” The university is providing support to his family, students and colleagues.
U.S. authorities have emphasized the investigation is active and ongoing, with no public indication of foreign involvement.
