Monsey, NY – In a few months, the Rockland county clerk’s office will start blacking out Social Security numbers on computerized documents.

Although the documents would remain untouched – as required by law – the public would be unable to see the numbers when viewing them on the Internet or the office’s public computer terminals.
“We do not know of any identity theft that has derived out of any county clerk’s office in New York state,” County Clerk Paul Piperato said yesterday.
“We’re taking the precaution,” he said. “We’re trying to be proactive to protect the public’s records.”
The software that will scan the documents and black out any nine-digit number is being paid for by a $54,375 state records-management grant. [journalnews]
Personal information should be blacked out according to the NY state FOIL law. I don’t know why they just woke up now.
