New York, NY – Railroad, subway and bus riders and motorists who use the MTA bridges and tunnels all would have to swallow a fare hike next year but could expect the same or improved service, under a proposed four-year financial plan introduced today by Lee Sander, the CEO of the nation's largest mass transit system.

The plan calls for raising an extra 6.5 percent from riders and toll payers in 2008 – or $320 million – followed by 5 percent fare and toll yield increases every two years thereafter. The fare increase could take effect in February or March but would be preceded by public hearings and board approval of the financial plan in December.[Journal News]
