Rep. Moran, has been in hot water in the past few years with Jewish groups for making derogrity statments against Jews.
At a March 3 antiwar forum in Reston, Virginia, Moran talked about why he felt the antiwar movement was not stronger in the United States.
“If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq, we would not be doing this,” said Moran, whose remarks were first reported by the Reston Connection newspaper. “The leaders of the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change the direction of where this is going, and I think they should.”
The remarks, interpreted by some as anti-Semitic, casued a fire storm and were strngly condemned, even House Leader Nancy Pelosi came out strongly against his statement saying that “His comments have no place in the Democratic Party.”
Jewish groups have criticized Moran in the past for what they describe as his pro-Palestinian beliefs. It remains to be seen if the endorsemnt of Moran to Obama will derail many of Obama’s Jewish supporters. Will Obama need to explain himself again?
its funny how frum jews who defended racist bigots like strom thurmond and and trent lott and george allen are now upset at obama because he has the endorsement of moran.
people are simply nuts. we frum jews seem to be nuttier.
uh, someone please explain to me why those comments are considered to be anti-semitic. They seem to me a recognition of the pro-Zionist lobby in the U.S., and it’s undue influence on foreign affairs. But I don’t see any evidence in those statements of anti-semitism.
I used to live in Moran’s congressional district. The former Republican majority in the Virginia legislature tried to create a Republican-free zone, gerrymandering his district so that they could maximize the number of Republicans in almost every other district in the state. This explains his long tenure in spite of his offensive statements. (BTW, while he did make the comments you referenced on March 3, the year was 2003 — almost 5 years ago.)
American Rabbi, what makes no sense is that Jews of any nature are so naive as to believe any of these candidates. They run, get elected, and then are accountable to the deepest pockets and their future employers. Look closely at our past Presidents. They’re all on a payroll. They didn’t get there just for having President on their resume.
Anonymous 7:41 – President Bush’s plan is the pitiful gasp of a State Department that has been shackled – thankfully – by Bush. Let the Arabists have their 15 minutes, the new boss will undoubtably let them loose. Hashem Yirachem.
Have any of the candidates condemned Bushes plans, chasv’Shalom, for Israel?
It makes sense that Moran would be for Obama along with Jeremiah Wright, Geoge Sorros, and all the other anti-semites. What makes NO SENSE is that Jews, especially religious Jews, would vote for Obama. It can only be explained as a maseh Soton.
