Tuvia Stern, who jumped bail in 1989, was locked up without bail by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Laura Ward.
"Quite frankly, based on his history, I don't see any amount of bail that would secure [Stern's] return to court," Ward said.
Stern, who was brought back, had been fighting extradition since being detained in December 2006 while trying to enter England, the daily news is reporting.
Stern and his brother, Ephraim, were accused in June 1989 of stealing $1.7million through a pair of scams that targeted Bell Atlantic Systems Leasing and Morgan Guaranty Trust Co.
While out on $250,000 bail, Tuvia Stern fled to Brazil with his wife and five children.
But Tuvia Stern couldn't manage to avoid trouble even in Brazil, where prosecutors said he was jailed for two years and nine months for his part in an insurance fraud scheme.
Why cant this family get it strait and stop stealing and get a real job…
He will now sit in otisville for years and this is realy sad….
His family will grow up and he will not be there to see anything
The statute of limitations doesn’t apply if you’ve been charged and jumped bail. In that case, you can be brought back even a hundred years later.
The Wolf
There’s no statute of limitations if you were indicted and then fled. It only applies when no legal proceedings were held against you at all.
Isnt there some kind of stature of limitation on these cases. This doesn’t sound right
