Police commissioner James Clarkson says violators are usually just ordered to cover up. But the law allows for a $270 fine or six months in jail.
At least a few locals are contesting fines.
Clarkson said Friday that cruise ships usually inform passengers of proper non-beach attire, but “from time to time, there is the one or two who take their chances.”
He said a few months ago police ordered several tourists wearing swimwear at a fort to return to their cruise ship and put on some clothes.
Maybe those objecting to Kent Ave. Biking should move here?
Guess the world is not so crazy after all.

Jamaica has a similar law. *Men* are prohibited from going topless away from swimming areas.
even if they can’t wear bathing suits in town, they can still wear shorts and tank tops. its still a treyfe country. no religious jew can go there.
if they would try to do that in brkyln during the spring/summer a lot of people would be fined
We have to agree that some times the world improves even in modesty issues.
Years ago, it was against the law for men to go topless, even in NYC. That was only changed about 75 years ago. Also women’s swimwear had to be more modest as well. You can see this in old newspaper reports. In old photos you will also see that the men have tops on at pool/beach and women are more modestly dressed than some today.

Don’t make light of a v. important issue, Tznius is a fundamental issue when that starts slipping lots of important issues slide along- for all those who think it is nerdy to be too tznius please realize the reasons for the halachas have not changed – how do people rationalize that change is ok by stating “times have changed” I truly cannot understand.
A while back, I was on the island of St. Thomas. When I was there, I found that they have a similar cultural attitude — that beach clothing should be worn at the beach, but that around town, a more modest attire was required. I don’t know if it was codified into law, but I know that I never saw anyone walking around town in a bikini top.
