Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said Monday he has obtained a temporary restraining order against National Home Protection Inc. and three of its principals — Leo Serrur, David Seruya and Victor Hakim.

Their home warranty plans promise to repair or replace household appliances and systems if they break. Pending court action, the company can’t sell any more out of New York.

Mr. Cuomo isn’t sure how many people are affected. But he says customers often spent hundreds of dollars on a warranty but National refused to honor contracts.

The company didn’t return calls Monday.

These “home warranties” are such a scam. If you read the fine print, they are under no obligation to really do anything. It is a way to help sucker people into buying junk houses.

Seek out legitimate warranty companies (there are not may) and purchase your own when you buy the house (you work with the seller to use your company if they are going to pay). It is about time someone did something about this.
