A phase five alert is a strong signal that a pandemic is imminent.

It is called when there is human-to-human spread of the virus in at least two countries in one region.

So far, 150 people are thought to have died from the H1N1 strain.

The change in level would put governments on alert about the need to stockpile antiviral drugs such as Roche’s Tamiflu and GlaxoSmithKline’s Relenza.

And also to speed up efforts by the pharmaceutical industry to create a vaccine to fight the swine flu strain.

159 is the number who have died in Mexico from the disease. Thousands there have already been infected. I spoke to someone I know who works in public health, and she is very worried about this flu. There are confirmed cases in at least 10 US states. Even if at some point the rate of new cases starts decreasing, it may increase again rapidly in the fall flu season.

One person I know who is in public health is worrying about what will happen in the fall and winter flu season. I guess it is not that likely for a vaccine to be deveped in time for that. Hopefully enough steps will be in place by then to help control the spread of this. When will the US get get temperature screening equipment to prevent those who have a fever from boarding flights? Will Mexico get this? If this technology isn’t that expensive, then perhaps it might be used in schools, and on buses and trains as well?
