New York, NY – The 14 percent water rate hike on tap this year could be followed by another wallet-crunching 12 percent increase in 2010.

That would represent the fourth double-digit boost since 2007 and would propel the annual water bill for typical one-family homeowners past the $1,000 mark for the first time.

“One could say water rates are really out of control,” fumed City Councilman Jimmy Vacca (D-Bronx) at a tense City Hall hearing.

The Water Board seems certain to approve a 14 percent rate increase requested by the Department of Environmental Protection at its next meeting May 15, increasing the average bill from $799 to $911.

Another 12 percent is in the forecast for 2010, a figure not previously disclosed.
That would drive up the average tab to $1,020.

All the law abiding water bill payers are the fools! For the last 15 years the city ignored non-payers, just sending them threatening letters. At the end the city caved in and settled old bills for pennies just to get them settled. people like me that paid all along should leran a lesson.

Does anyone know how NYC water bills compare to other cities? I know that our electric charges are 40% higher than the national average.

By the way, I have a 1 family house and my water bill is already $1,200 a year

Before you start talking about non-payers, know this. The NYC water board doesnt see a quarter of the money they bring in. Like everything else in NYC, the water company is a business for the benefit of the city. Yes, it is rare that a city will tax residents so high on utilities.” I say move to New Jersey, where the politicians are less corrupt……………”

Anyone want to bet? i bet that Bloomberg’s parking tickets and sanitation tickets will both also increase in fines. Don’t you understand? If you own a house or a car, you will pay and pay and pay. If you do not own a house or a car, you will receive and receive and receive. You have just read a synopsis of the Bloomberg policy against capitalism.
Also, Bloomberg will continue to pull people off of the welfare roles and drag them out of their carbohydrate filled kitchens, and send them slowly shuffling their 300 pound bodies down the street, to give you tickets and promote anger and hate.

What’s going to happen is that New yorkers are going to start saving on their water usage in order to save $$$ NYC is going to end up with very little more revenue due to the the lesser water being used by NYC residents…..
the same thing happened with Crude oil but Plumberg apparently does not think that way.

These outrageous water bill hikes will bankrupt the DEPT. You’ll see.

This is criminal. The reason for the hike is that the City fails to collect outstanding water bills and does not prosecute deadbeats. As a result, those dutiful citizens who regularly and timely pay their water bills, are being forced to pay for the deadbeats. Revolt!

It’s becoming impossible to live here. We need Askunim to orgonize New frum and affordable communities outside the NYC area where you can commute to the city or find jobs there.

Lets say I don’t want to pay for the water, do I have another option to get water into my house?

What I’m trying to say is that we are hostages of the the City.

this is not bloomberg. this is government. they take money to feed themselves. reduce governement, reduce costs you can reduce taxes. bloated governement and special interests costs money. so we tax. water. (btw look at athe surcharges in your phone, cell, electric gas bills too. more way to drip you dry). yes we are hostage to the beast we created. try getting water from the sky, and buy water to drink. right.
