Jerusalem – Ashkenazi Charedi Leaders Challenging Gur over Chinuch Atzma’i

Jerusalem – Rabbinic leaders of the Ashkenazi Haredi community held a rare summit in Jerusalem to discuss the fate of the community’s Hinuch Atzma’i school system.

The conference, the first in 29 years, is an open challenge to the Gur Hasidim, the largest Hasidic sect in Israel and one of the many sects within the broader Ashkenazi Haredi community.

Gur on Sunday tried to get the summit postponed, but failed.

The battle for control of Hinuch Atzma’i – which is extremely influential and controls vast budgets – began in January 2008, when longtime executive director Meir Luria died suddenly, sparking an inheritance battle.

However, the battle was not just personal: Rather, Gur was fighting to maintain its power against a coalition of smaller Hasidic sects plus the non-Hasidic “Lithuanians.” The United Torah Judaism Knesset faction is composed of the Lithuanian Degel Hatorah party, along with the Hasidic Agudat Yisrael.

The coalition was led by veteran MK Meir Porush, who was then also running for mayor of Jerusalem. The Hasidic Porush had secured Degel Hatorah’s backing for his mayoral bid via a secret deal in which he promised to restructure Hinuch Atzma’i’s management such that Gur would lose its primacy and be reduced to a “proportionate share” based on its size.

That caused an internal Haredi rift which, inter alia, resulted in the Haredim losing the mayoralty: Porush was defeated by Nir Barkat after Gur withheld its support to retaliate for his deal with Degel Hatorah.

It also prompted the opening of another Haredi daily, Hamevaser, representing the smaller Hasidic sects, on top of the veteran Hasidic daily Hamodia and the Lithuanian Yated Ne’eman.

Finally it led UTJ to appoint MK Moshe Gafni (Degel Hatorah) as chairman of the Knesset Finance Committee instead of MK Yaakov Litzman, the Gur Hasid who held this post in three previous Knessets.

Todays summit was expected to approve the establishment of a new nonprofit organization to run Hinuch Atzma’i, in place of the organization that Gur founded decades ago.

When this idea was first broached in late 2008, Gur, in an unusual move, sued in civil court to halt the new group’s registration.

But Gur would have trouble taking similar action against a move approved by the rabbinic heavyweights attending Monday’s conference – who represent not only Degel Hatorah and Agudat Yisrael’s Israel branch, but also Agudat Yisrael’s American branch.

The Hasidic leaders approved the establishment of a new association to run the independent Haredi education system. The new association would replace the current one, established by the Gur Hasidic sect decades ago.

In addition to Hasidic leaders, two of the most important figures in the non-Hasidic ultra-Orthodox world, Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv and Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman, were also present. They praised the Haredi unity expressed by the presence of three significant groups: the Council of Torah Sages of the non-Hasidic Degel Hatorah, and representatives of Agudat Yisrael from Israel and the United States.

When asked whether the move was another step in this war, Rabbi Menahem Porush, father of MK Meir Porush answered: “subconsciously, yes.”

What’s new it’s the Ashkenazim Litvakim just being themselves?
What happened they’re fed up with discriminating against the Sfardim?
Can’t these Litvaks ever be peaceful??

Don’t challenge me since “we all” know this is true?

The Gur chassidus is losing both political power and moral leadership among many yiddin. This is nothing new. They have been in decline for a while and their own parochial and arcane politcial infighting is only making it worse.

Just a small correction. Porush and others have had issues with Gur for decades, right or wrong – I am not the one to judge or even have an opinion.

Porush didn’t want to have Gur reduced to a “proportionate share” but rather use the Chinuch Atzmai as an opportunity to deliver a blow to Gur, reducing them to lower than their proportionate share – it subsequently lead to a series of maneuvers,

I’ll sit back and watch – but in no way enjoy – the ride.

Oh the poor Baalei Teshuva who read things like this and find out that the frum community is not one big Kum-ba-ya around the campfire. Hey, note to everyone….it’s all about money and power. (Except to those of you who read this and believe still that it is all lishma….and will still vote for St. Lawrence.)

I and many others call on Gur to do teshuvah shleimah. Why destroy the Bes HaMikdash over kavod? Flee from Kavod as the BST taught. Mevatel yourselves to the Gadolim. Amen.

Before anyone comments about “gelt”, just take a moment to think about this clearly. The chinuch atzmai funds go DIRECTLY to support Torah institutions in the Holy Land. None of the Rabbonim at this meeting will personally benefit from a dime from this cause. There may be some differences as to where and how to allocate the money, but it’s all about Torah study by tinokes shel beis rabon.

This kenos might be legal in term of Israeli law but is not legal in terms of halacho nor yoisher. This is what exacerbated the disagreements and sinaas chinom that Porush so egregiously continues to advance. Chinuch Atzmai was an original Agudas Yisroel project and affiliated entity, following daas Torah as decided by the Moetzes of the Aguda which included the chasidishe admorim. Porush is dividing klal yisroel by adamantly forging ahead and creating ill will between the admorim and the litvish gedolim. There should not exist an entity called Degel Hatorah altogether. The Aguda was founded equally by admorim of Poland, roshei yeshiva and rabbonim of lithuania, and the gedolim of germany. This was true achdus of klal yisroel. Porush is making a power grab by excluding admorim not on his side and the Aguda from any discussions and decisions regarding Chinuch Atzmai. Somebody should remind Porush that the concept of Mi Sheporah still applies and will apply to him as well.

Where was the Belzer Rebbe? The Tzanser Rebbe? The Seret Viznitz Rebbe?

Before you all jump to conclusions on how much Tshuvah Gur needs to do, please check your facts!!!!

An invitation was sent to he Gerrer Rebbe in ways you wouldn’t invite your own enemy!!!!!!

The chutzpah that some people have is astounding.

In case any of you bloggers are not aware, this has nothing to do with sinas chinom. It is not chinom. You are talking about considerable money, jobs, and power. This is all about that.
It has nothing to do with Torah, Yiddishkeit, and even Kovod HaTorah.
    It is all money.
Not to imply that jobs and money is not of importance to all (Litvish, chassidsh, etc). It most defintely is. Each side is out for their kollel yungerleit and wives, in total disregard to the others needs.
Seems that Ger wanted to divy it up according to numbers, and the others refused. They only wanted it their way.
Enter Porush and his “behind-the-scenes” politics, as described above.
He for sure does not mean Kovod HaTorah – only pure politics.
How sad that Ger gets blamed for others sins.
Sounds like true sinas chinom – for shame.

Our capital city, Jerusalem has been sold out by the Rebbe of Gur for some financial gain ,somewhere into his financial empire. The demonstrations will not stop as long as this one term Mayor Barakat and his anti frum agenda is in power. Can klal yisroel ask the Gerrer Rebbe to stand up and explain his ugly shinanigans? Umoideh Veoizev Yerucham,

All Israelis know that this is a boxing match. The Gerers won the first few rounds by flooring Porush during the elections. But Porush is tough, got up at the eight count and has been jabbing away at the Gerer glass chin since then. Count this one as a unanimous round for Porush. In the next round, I look forward to a big left hook out of nowhere from Litzman to the soft litvish belly (remember, the Porush family is vintage litvish). Who will win? Who knows? The only real loser is yiddishkeit.
