Israel – “Oil exploration drillings in Warsaw Park,” ZAKA announced on roving loudspeakers this morning (Sunday) in Bnei Brak, drawing large crowds. But later the onlookers discovered the heavy “drilling” equipment brought in was merely part of a Purim prank in which the weekly Hamishpacha, ZAKA, a construction company and even the municipality were all in cahoots.

The public took the bait, believing declarations by a municipal official that city residents would soon be exempt from local property taxes.
First charedi weekly Hamishpacha reported a large oil well flowed under Rechov R’ Akiva, claiming that soil samples sent to a Boston laboratory had confirmed a large quantity of oil lay beneath Bnei Brak’s main street and that exploratory drilling would soon be under way.
Construction company Z. Landau was also in on the gag. Bulldozers and drilling equipment were hauled in, with engineers, supervisors and 15 Thai workers to play the part. A local sign company posted signs explaining the project. ZAKA’s task was to spread the word, and some claim even the municipality had a hand in the grand practical joke. Webside Bneybraki filmed the commotion.
ZAKA cars took to the streets at 9:30 a.m., “warning” residents to avoid the location due to the drilling. This, of course, drew an enormous crowd right away.
The head of the Infrastructures Department at the City of Bnei Brak announced there was indeed oil in the area and they had been waiting for the right time to drill. He said if oil was found, residents would be exempt from local property taxes.
The television news programs sent in film crews, which starting documenting the “development.”
Only at 11:00 did the municipality reveal it was all a big joke. Some of the beguiled onlookers were amused, while others were angry. The police, who had not been informed about the prank, took it the hardest. They even held a Mishpacha reporter for questioning.
Soooo not funny grow up
It’s nice to see that some people have senses of humor. I think the funnies part is when you warn people not to o somewhere, they go to “check it out”
That’s pretty clever. I hope no taxpayer money was used to pull that off, though.
what exactly is the joke part?
People in Bnai Berak obviously have nothing better to do with their time.

The police wasn’t informed? Mishpacha magazine journalist held for questioning? Great. Now MORE anti-charedi ammo for them…
Israeli humor. Pathetic.
Wow this was better than the GREAT prank they pulled off at Telz Chicago last week!!!
Mishpahca has grown increasingly irresponsible in the past year or two both in their editorial commentary as well as in stupid pranks like this.
Is this all ZAKA has to do? If so…GREAT!!!
Otherwise, I think it’s bloody stupid.
I rlly think ud only see that in the haradi world….terrable
Luckily for some potential investors, the stock markets were closed when the ‘announcement’ was made…והמבין יבין
Great and innocent joke.
Glad to see that there are yidden who are not busy looking to be Mtzar the Klal with Chumros and instead using their talents to create Kosher Simcha.
Oh, how we laughed – not.
It sounds like a stupid prank.

Bnei Brak is one of the poorest municipalities in Eretz Yisroel. It is also one of the more insular. I am sure that there were many people that got their hopes up (if even for a minute) that their lives might become better. Then it was all taken away. This also was a terrible waste of time and money, which could have been better used for Purim and Matanos levyonim. This was not a brilliant prank, this was something that was just designed to fool people, who would not know better. I am Dan lekaf zechus that the perpetrators did not realize the full ramification of hurt feelings and wasted money.Any prank that hurts peoples feelings or plays on peoples naivette is no longer a joke. May we all have a happy and frielech Purim and Achdus in Klal Yisrael ad Bias Goel
What an incredible waste of yiddishe gelt….there are many hungry familys in bnei brak who could of been fed with this aroisgvarfener gelt…
I guess you had to be there…
The bittul torah this must have cost… I also hope that the boys and the girls all went to separate parks…
Absolutely hilarious!
