Israel – Satmar Present Set of Rules Against Zionism

    79

File photo of the previous Satmar Rabbis Rabbi Joel Teitelbaum, and Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum, attending a protest in Year 1958 in Manhattan center against IsraelIsrael – In honor of the 31st anniversary of the death of first leader of the Satmar Hasidism anti-Zionist sect, Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, a number of his followers published a pamphlet in his memory containing sixty questions and their answers regarding the rabbi’s zealous attitude towards the State of Israel.

The pamphlet is entitled “Ish Milhamot” (Man of Wars). It is intended to act as a guide for the perplexed Hassid. In its own words, it provides “clear answers to those seeking the truth to questions and queries over the test of time so the current generation will know the path it should take.”

According to the Satmar rebbe, Zionism is a total violation of the Torah. “If we were to take all the violations of the generation and the many transgressions committed around the world and placed them on one side of a scale and the Zionist state on the other side, it would be overwhelmingly decided that it is root of all impurity and damage in the entire world and contaminates the entire world,” the rebbe wrote in the pamphlet.

In response to the question “Who is the minister of the Zionists in Heaven?”, the rabbi answered in a response from the previous century, “Obviously the Angel of Death is their minister. Behold, every country has its governor… this country, which is rooted and based in the forces of impurity and the Other Side, this certainly is its minister.”

The pamphlet also outlines: Even those who believe that a Jewish state must exist in the Land of Israel having no other choice because of pikuach nefesh (saving a life) “violate the holy Torah.” The pamphlet directs readers to the Tractate of Avot, saying that the sentence “every man is judged favorably” is said about everyone except Zionists. In addition, it asserts that it is a mitzvah to speak lashon hara (slander) about Zionists.

“Whoever has a part in this is delaying redemption at every moment and is delaying the inspiration of the Divine Presence and is delaying the coming of the Messiah. Even someone who takes the smallest part, even as slight as the edge of a yod (the tenth and smallest letter of the Hebrew alphabet)… even someone who bends towards them, even by one hair, must be avoided like a bowshot. Whoever thinks yes (that Zionism is the correct path) and not just whoever says yes or even has a thought to this effect, is certainly a heretic.”

The rabbi added, “I do not want to have any association with a Jew who thinks like this, and I do not want to find anyone who thinks like this even for a moment in my beit midrash (house of study)… In previous generations, if people only suspected of someone that he has tendencies to think this way in his heart, he was sent away, not included in prayer, and in this manner was they ride themselves of such plight.”

The pamphlet’s authors quoted a number of extreme statements made by their rabbi and translate them into practical halachic instructions. For instance, prayer rallies held by Religious Zionists or haredim must not be attended, even in a time of war; the rulings of great Torah scholars who recognize Israel must not be followed, saying they are the root of all of Israel’s troubles.

“Truly, if it were possible, and even with true devotion, to announce to the nations of the world that these evil people are not the representatives of Israel and Torah- and mitzvoth-keeping Jews, who have no connection to them, this would be one of the biggest mitzvoth that would need to be carried out with devotion,” it was written in the pamphlet.

Zionism, according to Rebbe Teitelbaum, will not last forever. The following is a translation from his writings in Yiddish. “The Messiah will not come until no remnant or survivor remains from this kingship. It must become null and void. A Jew who believes in the Creator of the Universe cannot be satisfied with anything otherwise… all the buildings built by the heretics and infidels in our holy land will be burnt and destroyed by the Messiah king.”

In the meantime, the Satmar pamphlet also stipulated that living in the State of Israel is forbidden.

In another section, the pamphlet implied that a rabbi need not be consulted before carrying out acts against Zionists, based on the model put forth by the biblical Pinhas who killed Jews who sinned.

Regarding homes containing an Israeli flag, the pamphlet instructed Satmar followers not to enter. “Beyond any doubt, a house containing any reference to the flag must not be entered because it is a bastion of the forces of impurity.”

The Satmar rebbe wrote of the renewal of the Hebrew language is worse than speaking “languages of the nations” because changing the holy language is “contemptible, abominable, and impure.”

“It is completely forbidden to speak Hebrew because it is an extension of the actions of the heretics and infidels who destroy and ruin religion and thus acknowledges the heretics and infidels and their idol worship and is a violation of the entire Torah.”

Only now years later do we see how right the great rabbi was. in this whole subject. only now do we see what their original goal was. what a shame on us being represented by such people who want that judasim in a whole should mean something else than it use to mean. what a shame on this whole situation what a loss that we all didnt see this happening in the first minute. we would have saved so much. We would of saved jewish children from being were they are today. (all the children from teiman) we would save so much holy tombs from being uprooted. WHAT A SHAME! WHAT A SHAME!

let’s not forget, that 99% of gedolim, belz, vishnitz, ger, klausenburg, and all of the roshey hayeshivas, the chazon ish, steipler, thsebiner rav,rav isser zalman meltzer, rav ahron kotler, reb moishe feinstein etc.etc. they all vehemently disagreed with him,

could be, I think he might have been bitter that the secular and Zionist did a better job in saving Jews during WWII than he did. He told his chasedeim to stay and that was their death sentence. Therefore, to save himself and admit that the Zionist where right to leave, he attacks them.

He could of handled it better

Do the Satmar Rebbe and/or NK claim that before mashiach the Jews are prohibited from conquering the Land of Israel?

The overwhelming majority of authentic POSKIM in the last thousand years strongly refute the Satmar Rebbe and NK’s primary halachic positions.

For example, see Pischei Tshuvah Shulchan Aruch Evan HaEzer 75:6 which states that all the rishonim and achronim held there is today a mitzvah of YISHUV HAARETZ. Also see the Ramban additional mitzvah #4 in Sefer HaMitzvos, where he clearly states it is a milchemes mitzvah to conquer Eretz Yisrael.

Regarding relinquishing land to genocidal Jihadists, see Shulchan Aruch Orach Chayim 329:6 which strictly prohibits ceding land to our enemies.

Furthermore, Satmar’s halachic “analysis” is based on ignorance of basic historical facts. For example, how many Satmars are aware that:

    1. In the 1920’s the US Congress passed a law recognizing the Palestine Mandate to create a Jewish homeland.

    2. In November 1947 the UN General Assembly, after being given control of Eretz Yisrael by the British, voted by a majority vote (33 to 13) to partition Eretz Yisrael into Jewish and Arab states.

    3. It was the Arabs, not the Jews who violated International law when the Arabs attacked the new Jewish state. The Jews fought the Arabs in self defense, NOT in rebellion against the nations. Self defense is allowed under both HALACHA and International law, regardless of whether the Satmars allow it.

See the Sefer Eim HaBanim Smeicha, which is translated to English, and available online. Google “Eim Habanim Semeichah” and
see the tsel web site. This sefer was written by a authentic pre-war European Gadol who accused the anti-zionist rabbis of pre-war Europe of committing the CHET HAM’RAGLIM and having blood on their hands for telling Jews not to immigrate to Eretz Yisrael. Regrettably, this sefer is rarely learned or discussed in Chareidi circles because it explodes the halachic errors of the anti-zionist rabbis.

Not c”v to argue with thr Satmar Ruv, ztzk”l, zy”a, but what is the solution today? There are seven (?) million yiddin living there today, even if it is true (and there were still other gedolai yisroel of his generation who didn’t entirely agree with him) their parents and grandparents should not have gone there.

What should be done now? Give the country to the yishma’ailim and sit back and watch the murder of another six million yiddin, c”v?

Ask Hungry and Poland and Romania and Ukraine and Lithuania and Slovkia and Bulgaria and Albania and countries that no longer exist to take back those who have roots in those countries, and feed the Eastern European’s another few million gallons of Yiddisher blood?

To protest in front of the U.N. and weaken the security of the state by encouraging its enemies? To fight against today’s secular state that doesn’t itself believe in Zionism, who couldn’t tell you the first thing about Hertzel’s Zionism?

Seriously, I’m not Satmar or even chassidish but my kids know they’d better step between me and even a guest in our home who says one word even hinting something against the Satmar Ruv (or any of the haileger ladies in Satmar Bikur Cholim, of course).

Facts being what they are today though, what is the sensible solution?

What would Reb Yoel ztzk”l, zy”a, the fire in the belly of chassidus, what would the lion of yiddishkeit say today? Mistam it would be worth to fast from Elul to Yom Kippur to be zocheh to know the answer to this 7,000,000 person question.

not clear to me what the position of Stmar is on negotiating peace. does Satmar favor a one state solution with a Palastinian majority?

it’s hard to imagine that chareidim living in Kiryas Seifer or Mea Shearim would want to hand over thir security and budgetary needs to the palestineans, but based on some of the posts here, that seems to be the case.

I haven’t seen the chareidim, or Satmar for that matter advocate in favor of the Palestineans taking over Yerushlayim, K”O or other chareidi towns. why not and what is their position on this?

I’m sure zionism is bad, but other gedolim disagreed on how to handle the issue. Remember we have over 6 million of our brothers “stuck” there for good, so agitating the situation is playing with 6 million lives.
One thing is a definite no no… The chillul hashem happening in satmar’s own back yard is a lot worse than zionism

It is a foolish and ignorant document. Ignoring the fact that despite Satmar rav’s dire predictions, Israel has become today the largest Jewish community in the world, and the greatest mokom Torah in history.

According to his Shita this is all the work of the Satan himself not G-D. (sic).
but G-D himself brought Aushwitz on the European Jews as a punishment.

The churban hatora and the Holocaust is G-Ds work but the saving of Jews and rebuilding of Tora is left to the Devil.

After reading last night’s article here on VIN that the satmer in KJ are fighting each other over garbage and trashing/vandalizing one another’s homes and cars over garbage, why would any rational yid take this piece of garbage seriously. Many chashuve rabbonim as noted by other posters including the belz, vishnitz, ger, klausenburg, rav moshe etc. ALL dismissed the Satmer rebbe’s obcessive hatred of eretz yisroel and the ultimate in sinsas chinam and the reason moishiach has not come. This latest piece of trash belongs with the others, in the trash can.

This is the kind of nonsense we usually hear from the Hamas thugs and the Iranian mullahs.

“the pamphlet implied that a rabbi need not be consulted before carrying out acts against Zionists, based on the model put forth by the biblical Pinhas who killed Jews who sinned”

This would put the author of the pamphlet in the same category as the most vile Arab terrorists. Din rodef?

There is a famous story that occurred with the Gaon Horav Shragah Feivel Mendolovitch, the peron without question that brought Torah to America. In a meeting with the Satmar Rov, he quoted many Midrashim and Gemoro’s to support the Stamar philosophy. After the meeting Rav Shraga Feivel said that he could have quoted just as many Midrashim and Gemora’s to refute the Satmar Rov and support the Yishuv Haaretz philosophy, but he said he didn’t because it was clear that the Satamar Rov had his mind made up. The bottom line is that Satmar is a Daas Yachid today and the majority of Gedolai Yisrael do not support his position.

To all talkbackers. Rav Yoel ain’t the first Gadol nor is he the last and final gadol. Rav Yoel came into this world in middle of a long and rich history of Israel and the Jewish nation. i am not knocking his views but just a small thought. The time he said his view was a time that Israel was a police state. The People were innocent and dumb and the govt did what they did as communist Russia. Today however it is not so. They cannot do what they please in their own land without the world commenting. Every Rabbi in his time is needed. His time is up. Although his torah is forever his political views would have definitely changed I hope we can all agree on politics changing.
As a Jewish nation we must realize that G-d and only G-d runs the World. It is one of the 13 Jewish principles. We do not believe in the Devil or Satan competing with G-d. Hashem ish milchama Hashem Shimo. The devil did not fight for us. Please stop sounding like a bunch of catholics.
There were Jews and mainly Sephardic Jews living in Eretz Yisroel before satmar was even born. They are not the final view. Just as Avraham AVINU died 5 years early so as not to see esav sin so too Rav Yoel died the year NK started their own split from Judaism. The rabbis now and his students are not him. They are taking a risk in this world to follow one daas. There is a 50% chance they will go to heaven and 50% chance to hell. In my opinion it’s not worth that risk. I am sure if it is hell their rav rav yoel will be spinning in his grave.

No, there is no question that there was Torah in America before Rav Mendelovitz z’tz’l and that is no disrespect to him. JTS was Orthodox in its early days and its first graduate became Chief Rabbi of the UK. RIETS was already training rabbis at the time Rav Mendelovitz arrived, and Rabbi Jacob Joseph z’tz’l had been deceased for over a decade. And two generations earlier, Rabbi A. J. Rice and Ms. Rebecca Gratz were teaching torah to young people in Baltimore and Philadelphia, respectively. This does not diminish the great accomplishments of Rav Mendelovitz but he was not the first.

To the contrary, there were (and are) tremendous gedolim who were Zionists, including Rabbi Yitzchak Yaacov Reines z’tz’l, Rav Kook z’tz’l, Rav Uziel z’tz’l, Rav Herzog z’tz’l, Rav Soloveitchik z’tz’l, Rav Goren z’tz’l, Rabbi Avraham Shapira z’tz’l, and two who were nifter very recently: Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu z’tz’l and Rabbi Yehuda Amital z’tz’l. Note that Rav Soloveitchik was a member of the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah of Agudath Israel of America while still in his 30s!

Current gedolim who are Zionists include Rabbis Aharon Lichtenstein, Shlomo Aviner, Hershel Schachter, and Moshe Tendler.
