The Salt Lake City Tribune (http://bit.ly/1h9RqUC) reports Macon Michael Openshaw pled guilty to a federal civil rights violation for the shooting at the unoccupied Kol Ami Reform synagogue.
Openshaw fired three shots that broke windows and damaged other parts of the building. His guilty plea also included possession of a handgun with a damaged serial number and possession of other weapons in violation of federal law because Openshaw was under a protective order in 2012.
Authorities also found a sawed-off semi-automatic rifle in Openshaw’s car trunk.
Openshaw will be sentenced July 15. He could face five years in prison.
I’m curious to know why the headline of this article had to point out the fact, that the Synagogue which was attacked, was a Reform one? Does that make the crime any less despicable? When the Nazis destroyed Synagogues, and deported the Jews, did they first inquire if the Jews were Reform, Conservative, Orthodox, or Ultra-Orthodox?
