NEW YORK (VINnews) — In an exclusive interview with the New York Post, NYPD Chief of Dept. Terence Monahan had some harsh words for Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo made headlines on Tuesday when he denounced NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and the New York City police as ineffective in the face of the nightly looting.

“The NYPD and the mayor did not do their job last night, I believe that,” Cuomo said at his briefing in Albany. “You have 38,000 NYPD people. It is the largest police department in the United States of America. Use 38,000 people and protect property.”

When asked about Cuomo’s comments, Monahan said he was “extremely outraged.”

“I’m watching my men and women out there dealing with stuff that no cop should ever have to deal with, bricks, bottles, rocks,” he said. “Hit in the face with bottles and continuing to go forward to make an arrest.”

“This leadership team from every angle of this department is out on the streets, working side by side with their men, and for a governor to be sitting in his office saying that we’re not doing a good job — I’m outraged.”

Monahan also expressed his frustration with Mayor de Blasio’s controversial bail reform policy, which means that the violent thugs that the police had to quite literally walk through fire to arrest, will be back out on the streets in no time.

“When it comes to a burglary, which is a commercial store, which is looting, they’re back out,” Monahan said. “Because of bail reform, you’re back out on the street the next day. You cannot be held on any sort of bail. I spoke to (Manhattan District Attorney) Cy Vance about that. He told me there was nothing he could do.”

Yesterday, footage captured Chief Monahan in streets of Washington Square Park, where he showed solidarity by taking a knee and hugging peaceful protestors.

Afterwards, a visibly emotional Monahan spoke in support of the crowd.
