COVID-19 cases continue to grow at an alarming rate in eight neighborhoods in the city, outpacing the citywide average by 3.7 times over the past 14 days.

Six of the 8 neighborhoods saw increases even from the prior day’s report, based on our preliminary data.

These areas account for over 25% of new cases citywide over the past two weeks despite representing just under 7% of the city’s overall population. The data below is based on a 14-day average, which can more accurately reflect sustained trends than data pulled from a single day.

  • Gravesend/Homecrest [11223] (6.72%)
  • Midwood [11230] (5.53%)
  • Kew Gardens [11415] (3.61%)
  • Edgemere/Far Rockaway [11691] (3.98%)
  • Borough Park [11219] (5.26%)
  • Bensonhurst/Mapleton [11204] (5.15%)
  • Gerritsen Beach/Homecrest/Sheepshead Bay [11229] (4.05%)
  • Flatlands/Midwood [11210] (4.08%)

One new ZIP code has surpassed 3% positivity:

  • Kew Gardens Hills/Pomonok [11367] (3.04%)

In addition to these 9 ZIP codes, we have identified 3 additional ZIP codes that are showing increased growth of cases and test positivity between 2% and 3%, which are:

  • Rego Park [11374] (2.49%)
  • Kensington/Windsor Terrace [11218] (2.50%)
  • Brighton Beach/Manhattan Beach/Sheepshead Bay [11235] (2.63%)

Two out of the 3 areas above, have also increased in the percent of positive tests since the day before, according to preliminary data.

Williamsburg remains an area where we are observing a faster increase in cases compared to other parts of the city, even though the test positivity rate is below 3% (1.84%).

We continue to monitor emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and intensive care unit admissions. With COVID-19, increases in hospital visits generally follow an increase in cases. Data show we are starting to see an uptick in the number of hospitalized patients with COVID-19 in the city overall.

The City is working with community leaders and community-based organizations to distribute face coverings and combat misinformation. On Tuesday, to combat these rising rates, the City will conduct outreach to non-public schools about the new guidelines, canvass commercial corridors in these neighborhoods, and use soundtrucks to reinforce COVID-19 guidance and precautions.

This week, the City will also be deploying 11 mobile testing units to areas with high rates of COVID-19 positivity, with a focus on the neighborhoods above, tripling capacity of the COVID Express testing sites in Crown Heights and Fort Greene, and working  with community provider offices to supply new rapid testing capacity.

Why did you use this particular photo for this story? It creates unnecessary targeted animosity.

No one likes to wear masks. But, the experts say that it is in the individual’s and society’s best interest in order to save lives and end this plague. There are jerks in our community who refuse to wear masks on spite or as an act of rebellion, which is copies by other jerks. I have not been able to attend services at my Shul as a few jerks in an act of mob rule told the Rabbi that refuse to wear masks. No discussion occurred as these jerks should have been thrown out of the Shul a long time ago but the Rabbi is afraid of losing their donations. There is a store I shop regularly on Coney Island Avenue and not only shoppers refuse to wear their masks, but the workers, including the store manager go maskless. Even ShopRite, which makes an effort, there are jerks who wear their masks below their chin, on purpose.
If these jerks want to Joe Stupid Biden to win the election, just go on refusing to wear your masks as this will bring back this pandemic which will only hurt Trump’s relection chances.
Where are the Rabbis? Shouldn’t they be taking this pandemic seriously.
Any store which tolerates maskless shoppers should be boycotted.
Any one who refuses to wear a mask in Shul, should have their businesses boycotted. They are just as Treif as a pig.

What is the per capita rate of infection, and what percentage of the neighborhood population have antibodies? Of course, a denser population will more infections, compared to a more spaced out neighborhood where fewer people live. How many of the under 70 population have antibodies? (A major majority.) Where are those statistics?

According to city-data.com, the official data tracker of cities, 55% of 11210 is BLACK, so how do the Jews become the epicenter of the new Covid increase? 11691 is over 50% BLACK, must be a major number of Falasha’s or Stoudamire is an Chabadnik.

We need to resist closing schools at all cost . Defy orders . Open coops like the anti vaxers. However our kids must go to school . This is essential and as a frum Torah Jew our continuance is dependant on this . Covid May be around for another year . Anyone who thinks it’s normal to lock kids in a home and fight with 5 kids to call into conference calls with only two phones ? This is insanity and it must end . I will fight this madness till the bitter end .
Schools are essential and adults must wear masks . Adults follow the rules aside for when our kids lives are at stake .
