DeBlasio 2.0? Mayor Adams Proposes Defunding the NYPD

NEW YORK CITY (VINnews) Mayor Eric Adams, who ran for mayor as a “law-and-order” tough on crime candidate, is following in the footsteps of his predecessor Bill deBlasio on police funding.

In his first ever budget as Mayor, Adams proposed a $98.5 billion spending plan that cuts funding to most city agencies.

The plan would slash the NYPD budget by nearly $30 million, to about $5.41 billion, according to the New York Post. Adams insisted the proposed 0.6% cut kept police funding “basically flat.”.

Adams says that shifting some officers from desk duty to patrol would help reduce crime.

“We’re going to redeploy our manpower, we’re going to make sure that everyone who is supposed to be on the streets doing their job is doing their job, and then we will make the analysis if we have to put more money into it,” Adams said at a news conference Wednesday.

“I’m not going to do anything that’s going to get in the way of keeping New Yorkers safe,” he added.

In his first weeks in office, Adams has spoken harshly and even threatened police officers who are too tough on criminals. In January, Adams warned an elite group of NYPD cops not to use unlawful tactics or engage in misconduct, or they will be fired. On his first day in office, he was recorded on video warning police officers not to be too abusive or they will be fired. And several weeks ago, Adams apologized after a 2019 video surfaced showing him using a racial slur for white people when talking about the NYPD.

The city budget is bloated

Did everyone miss the first part of the article

“In his first ever budget as Mayor, Adams proposed a $98.5 billion spending plan that cuts funding to most city agencies.”

He is cutting funds from all city agencies and moving officers from desk duty to patrol is a great idea a measly 0.60% is nothing unless your always looking for reasons to be on the offensive

I’m not going to knock him on this. There is so far other issues, unfortunately, that he deserves criticism on. He needs to reign in spending responsibly. It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if there was a ton of wasteful spending, just like in most other government agencies.

A 0.6% cut. Not even half of what would qualify as “Botul b’Shishim”. And yet people here are buying this “defunding” narishkeit.
People will believe what they want to believe.

The reports I heard on WCBS and read today clearly state that the NYPD is the one agency that is not facing cuts in the new budget.

He should be cutting wasteful overtime. For some reason they don’t collect garbage when they are supposed to. Then when they do collect it, they do it at a time when they can charge overtime. Ex. Last night at 12:15 AM in Boro Park they were collecting garbage. That’s time and a half….

Misleading headline. Everyone relax. He has to balance a budget and explained how he would get all police back on the street.
