JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The Jerusalem Magistrates Court sentenced Kamel Hamidan of Beit Jalla to 12 months in jail after he maltreated a chareidi special needs youth four years ago at a Supermarket in Gush Etzion. Hamidan tied him up in saran wrap plastic and humiliated him in front of the camera.

Judge Yehoshua Tzimmerman said that he found the accused guilty of maltreatment of a helpless person as well as assault.

The judge said that “the description of the facts in the indictment and seeing the video clip indicate that the harming of the victim was at a significant level. The accused performed these actions on a number of occasions. I reject the claims of the defense, the accused performed these acts in front of the camera and was aware that the victim had special needs. It is especially infuriating that the defense has attempted to place responsibility on the employer who didn’t explain the sensitivity of working with special people.”

The judge also sentenced the accused to a fine of 10,000 NIS for his actions.

The mother of the victim said that “I am disappointed, I brought him up to be independent and this incident really hurt him. 10,000 NIS is ice cream money, it won’t enable us to rehabilitate him, it’s a joke. We are paying for treatments, 10,000 NIS is nothing, it doesn’t enable him to become independent.”

The father of the victim, Rabbi Shmuel Bloi, said that “we would have wanted a heavier punishment, at least five years in jail for harming a helpless person.”

MK Itamar Ben-Gvir, who had previously represented the family ,was present at the courtroom hearing. Ben-Gvir said that the indictment had been upgraded after his representation but the punishment was still less than required. “It’s time to give significant punishments to those who harm the weaker elements in our society.”

If it were a Jew the jail time and fines would likely be higher and the main thing the outcry would be much more. Like people would boycott the store till their out of business, or apropriatly sue them for damages and some. I think in today’s society many view Arab automatically as victim to begin with. Or looks away from this embarasingly but like what happened? no blood was spilled just be thankful.

If it had been the reverse, the Jewish kid would have been penalized to a much greater level. The judicial system is Israel is even more crooked that its political system.
