One of the most significant leaders among the rich and robust Jewish history of France, is of course Rashi.

Until several decades ago, the precise location of Rashi’s kever remained a mystery. Although he was buried in Troyes, and the approximate location of the cemetery in which he was buried was recorded in Seder Hadoros, over time the location of the cemetery was forgotten.

A number of years ago, a Sorbonne professor discovered an ancient map depicting the site of the cemetery, which lay under an open square in the city of Troyes. It is clearly a miracle that the cemetery, in which multiple Rishonim were buries, remained virtually untouched by construction.

After this discovery, French Jews erected a large monument in the center of the square—a large, black and white globe featuring the three Hebrew letters of רשי artfully arranged counterclockwise in negative space, evoking the style of Hebrew microcalligraphy.

The granite base of the monument is engraved: Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki — Commentator and Guide.

Rabbi Glatstein’s tour will have the z’chus and honor of visiting the kever on Rashi’s yahrtzeit, 29 Tammuz.

Other destinations include the tziun of Rabenu Tam, his brother the Rashbam and Ri Hazakan among many other Taalei Tosafos. In addition, Metz – the Bais Hachayim where Baalei Tosafos, avodat hagreshuni, kikion dyona, shaages aryeh and many other Tzaddikim are buried.

In addition, the tour will visit Provence, the south of France, the Arba Aratzos, and the grave of the Raavad.

The trip is being organized by Laleches, considered by many to be the gold standard in Jewish Touring.

I thought Rashi’s kever remained unknown whole just his birth place and Shul, in Northern Germany, are known and places for visitation.

The Nine Days begin next Friday, towards the end of this tour. Isn’t it inappropriate to be taking a luxury trip and touring (other than the kevaros part) during the Nine Days?

Another “Rabbi” needing to get on the leisurely trips and tours bandwagon. $$$.

I feel like such a fool! So much for commenting after just reading the title and before reading through the article.
