NEW YORK (Yaakov M / VINnews) — A New York Times reporter who has previously shown disdain for yeshivas and Chassidim, posted a tweet suggesting that yeshivas are powerful and influential, and then deleted it after backlash from Jewish leaders.

Eliza Shapiro posted a picture of a letter sent by Rabbi Avrohom Fruchthandler, President of Yeshiva Chaim Berlin to 5,000 alumni, urging them to vote for Lee Zeldin, writing “Our chinuch and way-of-life” are “at stake.”

Shapiro wrote: “Yeshivas continue to play a major role in the Gov race. Here, a major landlord and president of Chaim Berlin, a Haredi (non-Hasidic yeshiva), urges alum to vote for Zeldin, because he is “strongly opposed” to government intervention in schools.”

Here is a screenshot of the now-deleted tweet:

Shapiro’s tweet, which insinuated that the yeshiva was inappropriately influencing an election by supporting a candidate aligned with its values, was faced with backlash from frum askanim on social media.

Political activist Chaskel Bennett tweeted: “So many dog whistles in one tweet “major landlord” “Yeshivas” “Haredi”, as if encouraging people to vote for a candidate is somehow sinister or un-American. The lack of even-handedness & impartiality when it comes to the Orthodox community is so disappointing.”

Yaakov Kaplan, Vice Chair of Community Board 12, tweeted: “The irony of “Yeshivas don’t educate children” @elizashapiro tweeting about a Yeshiva graduate that’s a major landlord in NYC. Which one is it? Are we so uneducated that we need @nytimes articles translated into Yiddish, or are we a major force in NYC real estate?”

Shapiro wrote an infamous hit piece several weeks ago, blasting Chassidic yeshivas over their non-secular curriculum.

Bennett forgot to say Fruchthandler got a decent high school yeshiva education, can speak English flawlessly, and can write a coherent sentence!

What a lowlife! Church pastors and preachers don’t urge their congregants who to vote for?? Of course they do. Especially in all inner city black churches. And guess what party they tell them to vote for and which party they vilify?? I can picture Al Sharp -tounge in my mind right now.

Democrats support mutilating confused children.

PSA: I hope everyone realizes that we can now take advantage of mail in voting. Till recently, a vest small minority of our community voted. And it’s understandable. Women with children can’t drop everything to schlep to the polls. Our bochrim have yeshiva and our 18 year old girls ain’t waiting on line to vote either. But you no longer need to do that. You can now just fill it out in the mail at the comfort of your own home. We could increase our voting rolls ten fold I believe. There is no longer an excuse not to vote. And listen the dems used this to their advantage in 2020 which saw the highest turn out by far. I think over 10M more. Now let us use this too. I think this can bring in thousands maybe tens of thousands more for zeldin, and swing it. The askanim need to better inform and educate the masses how easy it is to vote. Rabbonim and rebas need to encourage folks to do this

NYT reporter not nice but how many of the 5k alumni who vote are not already Zeldin supporters (and Republican-leaning as are 80% of all frum Jews). maybe Lee will get a few hundred votes more votes from the letter- cant hurt, wont help that much

If you alienate everyone who disagrees with you then nobody is going to want to be your slaves when Moshiach comes.

How can we trust Mr. Zeldin? He is a Jew “married” to a shiksa. He voted for a bill to repeal and replaces provisions that define, for purposes of federal law, marriage as between a man and a woman and spouse as a person of the opposite sex with provisions that recognize any marriage that is valid under state law.
Can we trust his word?
