JERUSALEM (VINnews) — During the course of a condolence visit by the Sadigura Rebbe of Jerusalem to Rabbi Leo Dee, who lost his wife and two daughters in a terrorist attack on Pesach, Rabbi Dee made an unusual request of the rebbe.

Firstly he asked the Rebbe if he waves the Israeli flag and the rebbe responded positively. Afterwards he asked if the rebbe would be willing to recite Hallel on Israel’s 75th independence day, which falls at the end of next week.

The rebbe responded by telling a story from his great-uncle, who was the Sadigura rebbe after the Holocaust.

“My uncle lived in Vienna between the First and Second World Wars,” he said. “When the Nazis rose to power, they brought him to the streets of Vienna to clean the streets. He made a promise and said, ‘If G-d will be with me, and the Master of the World saves me from this horror, when I reach the Land of Israel, I will clean the streets of Israel.”

The Sadigora Rebbe continued, “When he managed to escape to Palestine, he indeed got up early in the morning and cleaned the streets of Tel Aviv. He did not tell anyone the reason why he did it, even when his followers questioned him as to why he was doing this.”

“This custom, of a love of the Land of Israel, is in our blood. And I think that we need to work more on loving every Jew, no matter how he dresses or what his opinions are. We will take this upon ourselves, and I think that the Hallel will come on its own,” he concluded.

I understand that Mr. Dee is grieving terribly, but I am a bit uneasy with his questioning and request of the Sadigura Rebbe.
What if the situation was reverse: what if a Religious Zionist was paying a shiva call to a Chareidi sitting shiva for 3 family members killed in a terrorist attack, r”l. How would he respond if he was asked to STOP waving the Israeli flag? To STOP saying Hallel on the Zionist holidays?

a rather odd request considering there is NO MESORA to say Hallel for a temporary government that ENCOUARGES the immigration of non-jews to a country that threatens with detention Torah learners. I along with all decent Yidden mourn his severe loss though.

It was not respectful to ask a Rebbe what he should do in areas that have strong different opinions. The Rebbe came to honor those sitting shiva and deserved more respect.

I don’t know when he waves the flag but his great great great uncle the Heiiligger Reb Shlomo of Sadigura who lived in TelAviv would always hang up a flag of Medinas Yisroel on the firth of Iyar in front of is house. (As did the Ponovizher Rav in front of his Yeshiva in Bne Brak).

Mr Yossi,

The Rebbe is saying something more deeper.

On Purim we don’t say Hallel. Why not? The Gemarah in Megilla says, Kriasa zu Hallelah. There are times – many times – that our actions speak louder than words.

In the case, louder than Hallel.

Very good answer
You are not making a good comparison:
Yom Tov there is a chiyuv to say Hallel, Yom hatzmaut is a made up day..
if a person or group of people decide to make a day of Hallel because Hashem saved them, that’s very nice, but it has to be 1000% with Emes and feeling of Hallel. We are not the Chachomim….
Additionally one does NOT have to say Hallel in order to show gratitude to Hashem for the great chesed.
What his “GREAT” uncle did, day in day out to show appreciation to Hashem, was a lot more meaningful then the ordinary Hallel that people say on the so called day of Yom Hatznaut” just to be “YOTZEH”…

If we really felt a great Hakoras Hatov to Hashem our appreciation would have shown up in many ways (like serving Hashem with great simcheh and enthusiasm), everyone would be able to see a life of HALLEL TO HASHEM

Meanwhile look at the people pushing Hallel down everyone throat as if it’s the end all be all of the gratitude poll

I will never understand the priorities of people calling themselves religious Zionists.
