NEW YORK (Yaakov M / VIN Podcast) — Last week VIN News posted a video commercial for a new company which teaches Chassidim to be proficient in English.

In response, many commenters were highly supportive, however one commenter posted the following:

Let’s be clear – you DO NOT need to know English to be successful. You can have an extremely impressive resume without knowing English.

And if you are even mildly resourceful, you can enlist a professional writer to create a sparkling resume which reflects your value.

On the flipside, many people who speak fluent English and even have a degree, still struggle to earn money and be successful, because they lack basic skills or intelligence.

Knowing English is a resource. It does not guarantee success.

Although this company appears to be providing a great service, which is in high demand in certain segments of the Charedi community, there is nothing wrong with a system of education that does not teach English.

The proof is that the vast majority of those who go through the system are highly satisfied with their chinuch, and proudly send their children through the same system.

I work with lots of Asians who are amazing at tech. They can code better than most white Americans. Many are just brilliant. They can barely speak English nor compose a normal email. Yet many are successful with some that are even VPs. We live in the days where constructing long formal memos and even well written emails, are over. Most communications are text like comments on whatever IM platform you use like Microsoft teams or Skype. The idea that one needs proper grammar and English to succeed is less crucial now more than ever.
