New York, NY – Woody Allen asked a federal court today to strip a clothing company of at least $10 million for using his image on billboards and on the Internet.

The lawsuit said Allen, 72, was not contacted by the company and did not consent to the use of his image dressed as a Hasidic Jew with a long beard and black hat and Yiddish text meaning "the holy rebbe." The words "American Apparel" also were on the billboard.
The lawsuit seeks at least $10 million in compensatory damages and unspecified punitive damages. [contracostatimes]
[One of the] Neshumos Artiluas. (literal translation, or transliteration) Naked (unclothed) Souls. Nebach. It’s the ultimate irony, that, woody allen, in his –almost– useless life, looks best in the Chassidic disguise. He looks like an admired, respectable Chassidic Rebbi, (in Willitown, maybe?!) (or, as a major player in “The Chosen”)!
Of all the diguises, and twists and turns, ups and downs (mostly downs) in Woody Allen’s [Nebby]/ [Nerdy] life? the Chassidic one, Felt hat and beard, suits him? best!
Gen. Comment.; Contemporary [Yiddish] Spelling would be HEILIGER ! HEILIKER, on the other hand could mean HIGH-LIQUOR!
Anon. 9:43AM to 8:05AM. …Go back to Law School… …and take a Spelling course, in English [Spelling]. (Redundancy) (Pls. Lk. Up in Dict.)
Anon 8:05 – 17 years is for patents (it is now 20 years BTW), not for copyrights).
Also if you want to go to law school to become a lawyer, fisrt learn how to spell “lawyer” (not “lawer”).
Ann, you still want to be a lawyer? The first thing you can do is a little research. I went to the Copyright office website and found the following:
As a general rule, for works created after January 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first.
Nothing about 17 years.
Go back to law school.
I don’t this he has a shot at winning. That photo was from his movie. Copyrights in this country last only 17 years. That one was made more than 17 years ago. What he may be able to get them on is that they used his image for a particular reason. I think that the ad agency can argue (with a simple street poll) that in that neighborhood no one would even recognize him as Woody Allen. Therefore, they only used the image as a stock photo – which has no protection due to its copyright has expired.
What do you teina? ( I should have been a lawer) 🙂
I thought it’s pronounced heiliger with a g, and it’s Montig, dienstig etc.
I believe everybody spells the days zuntik montik tuestik wendnestik thurstik fritik and shabtik
That was partly a joke but I believe the correct spelling is with a koof. At least in my dictionary.
The lefty liberal Jew hater depicted as a Chassid!! That’s what you call poetic justice.
‘Heilker” with a ‘keef’ (‘koof’ to Litvaks) is the ‘official’ Poylish/Litvish way of spelling it. ‘Zintik, Montik, Dinstik’ etc etc are all spelled with a ‘keef’ -not with a Gimmel (eg as you see in Der Yid).
seems you people are not from willi. that sign was up there for a short while. Allen & Houston. This company always has some provocative sign in that spot. this was better than the one they had there previously. let’s just say it wasn’t very tsniosdig.
that spelling for “heiliker” shows they have poor advisors in their ad agency.
you can not just use some ones face that you like for an advertisement without prior permission. Like huh!!
High Liker does Not mean holy
notice the billboard is on allen st
Note the street sign in the lower left corner…. 🙂
Woody Allen does not have enough money to live on? Big deal…..
His mama would have shepped nachas.
