Bern, Switzerland – The Swiss government has decided not to ease a ban on kosher slaughter. But they did promise Jewish leaders that the import of kosher meat will be guaranteed by law, according to a spokeswomen for Economy Minister Pasqual Couchepin.

“The decision was made in close cooperation with the Swiss Federations of Jewish Communities,” the spokeswoman said. The government promised to use all its influence to turn down a referendum submitted by an animal rights group that wants to ban the import of kosher meat altogether.

The Swiss government had considered legalizing kosher slaughter, but changed its tack in the face of a strong public reaction that had anti-Semitic overtones, government sources said. Alfred Donath, president of the Jewish Federations, said the law forbidding kosher slaughter is discriminatory and a violation of human rights and religious freedom. The government agrees, Donath said, but the Swiss public apparently does not [JTA]

They shouldn’t stop there, then. No fish, vegetables, eggs, all living entities up for human consumption should be allowed to be produced on Swiss land. All should be imported forthwith. I’m wondering now if those who made this ruling are actually crash test dummies they’ve imported.

all this means is that we are guaranteed that there will never be a shechita in Switzerland since they want to enshrine in law the right to import kosher meat. If there would not be a law allowing the import then there might possibly be a future reversal of the ban but if there is always an option laid down in law then the Swiss government will never have to consider the rights of the Jewish community since they are being catered for by importing.
