Assemblyman William Colton wants New York state to join San Francisco’s recent move to ban large retailers from using standard plastic bags at checkouts.
Colton says getting rid of plastic bags will reduce damage to the environment, cut down on street litter and landfill waste and help ease our dependence on foreign oil.
“This is a change that really is a win-win situation – from the point of view of saving money, from the point of view of the environment, from the point of view of fuel energy conservation,” said Colton. “It has been tried in other communities, and the time has come for it to be tried here in New York state.”

Instead of the current bags, stores would have the choice of recycled plastic that is biodegradable, recycled paper or reusable cloth bags.
If the law passes, New York would have the first statewide plastic bag law in the country. [NY1]

So diminishing oxygen-producing foliage for one-time-use bags is better than the ordinary re-usable sort?

first let’s place this so-called “lawmaker” into a plastic garbage bag bec. if all he is busy with is this he himself is trash. he was not voted ointo office for this kind of lawmaking. and let’s also find out what HE uses for his own garbage. and, oh yes, does he always use china.
get off your duff, mr. no-good lawmaker and get to REAL work. like the rest of us.

What about garbage bags, are they going to remain plastic?

Maybe we should stop placing our trash in bags and leave it on the street, let the garbage collectors bring their own bags…
