New York, NY – Times Square festivities for New Year’s Eve will shut down a broad swath of Midtown beginning at 4 p.m. Police and city officials are stressing that drivers should avoid the area and that revelers should use mass transit.

Starting at 4 p.m. – when crowds will already be vying for the best spots to party – all vehicles will be banned from Seventh Avenue between 42nd and 59th streets; Broadway from 42nd to 59th streets; and 43rd to 47th streets from Sixth to Eighth avenues.
Depending on crowd conditions, police also may shut down these crosstown streets after 6:30 p.m.: 37th to 42nd and 49th to 59th between Sixth and Eighth avenues; and 48th Street from Fifth to Ninth avenues. [nypost]
