Why must people “go” on chol hamoed were is this minhag from?
why can”t people stay home for once and enjoy a family bar bq or some quality time at home?

Kids don’t enjoy “quality time at home”. They do that all year. If going somewhere brings them joy, then their “vesomachta” is the trip. Voos farshteist du nisht?

Can vin or somebody else help me out…
I am new to LA and I don’t know where to go or what to do…
Btw, I agree with #3 but the family wants to go…
I want to sit in my succah sip my coffee and learn the whole week. Instead I am going to end up chasing my kids in idiotic ride parks…

Thats part of making your family happy and stay happy, the main meaning of this “CHAG” is “ach someiach” to be happy, and as the “chza”l” said; avery one should make their wife and children happy in chag.

Reply to #3: Maybe they spent enough quality time together on the first 2 days of Yom Tov. Who knows which is the bigger mitzva, chol hamoed trips or themed mishloach monos? Let’s at least try to avoid sites with a preponderance of pritzus. Chag Someach!

Making your family happy does not have to be uge trips – my kids are now coloring and keeping themselves busy – soon we will take them to the park & play ball

Anything that involves getting away from learning and shiurim and is bitul torah seems to be high on the priority list for “getting away” during chol hamoed. For most of us its a regular workday so the schools should be open rather than closing for 10 days…the whole month of tishrei is a waste in terms of any learning….

If you are willing and able to take a bit of a drive, it’s apple picking season in Orange County and north. You can spend one day apple picking and maybe a hayride and a picnic lunch. Then, the next day the kids can learn how to make applesauce, apple pie, apple strudel etc.

Another popular LA place for kids and adults is Underwood Family Farms. They have a lot of fruit/vegetable picking and other fun stuff.

I leave in kiryas joel and I did spend my chol h with my kids one year like this. I parked my car by the herriman MTA subway stop and took the train to NJ and then took the ferry over the hudson and then we took a cap and then we waked a little on the city st’s and then the bus home and it was SUCH a good chol h enjoyment. (We had a train/ferry/cap/walk/bus) and it was the cheapest from all the days and the most enjoyable. A gitan moiad evrybody. (And now at night beim rebens tish…)

New Roc City- $35 for an all day pass for the rides/activities (laser tag, bumper cars, pool, bowling, mini golf) five hours unlimited access to all video games. And there is a succah on the roof, and kosher food available under the Va’ad Harabonim of Queens (from Supersol). haimish crowd. (of course games where all you do is crash into cars or kill bodies isn’t very heimish, but hey the kids are entertained)

Be careful going to Riis Park, they will try to charge you for the circus when you can just buy tickets for the rides.

What did they do in Europe? Doubt they spent $250 a day entertaining the kids.
