New York, NY – Cheap-o jewelry sold at Walmart, Claire’s and at NY-area dollar-stores contains a dangerous metal that could harm children, according to recent investigations.

After Chinese toys were outed for containing lead last year, overseas manufacturers were forced to find different building blocks for their products. Some settled on cadmium, a metal that is extremely toxic, even in low doses. And kids don’t even have to swallow the jewelry to see its ill effects!

“They can get persistent, low-level doses by regularly sucking or biting jewelry with a high cadmium content,” says the AP report.

The investigation showed that out of 103 pieces of costume jewelry it bought at stores in New York, Ohio, Texas and California 12 contained at least 10% cadmium, which like lead, can cause brain damage in young children.

Cadmium poisoning can also be caused by smoking and can lead to flu like symptoms sometimes called “the cadmium blues.” The metal is seventh on the CDC’s most hazardous substances list. Exposure at high levels causes cancer.

After the report came out, Walmart announced that they are removing from their stores children’s jewelry cited in Associated Press inquiry on cadmium.

Every few months there’s a story about something made in China that is hazardous. Is anyone actually testing products that come in from China? Chinese people (those who live in China not those born in the USA) have no Rachmanus they will put anything in those products even if people die.

Between the lead, cadmium and ant-freeze in Chinese products, these stores should be banned.
As a side note, products sold in Chinese shops may be fakes made in China even though the label says otherwise.

Walmart is to blame for this. The executives should be on trial for the attempted poisoning of millions of Americans. Walmart forces suppliers to cut costs to the bone. Yes, the suppliers accept the contracts, but they wouldn’t feel forced if Walmart was not such a bully. Safety should come before profits, but for Walmart, the opposite is true.

There is something to be said for buying locally and knowing the manufacturer- even if the handmade item is more expensive than the import. I know as a handmade artist I know what is in all my products-

Maybe it is time to start remembering that money is not the only issue to address when looking into purchases.

Why is nobody talking about the 800 lb gorilla in the room…?

Why is it impossible to manufacture in the US? I don’t know: ridiculous union demands? Retardedly high taxes? Endless and increasing government regulations? Frivolous litigation?

You’d have to be a moron to produce anything in the US with all of the *C*H*A*N*G*E*!* everybody wanted.

What will happen when China starts exporting Cadillacs to the US?
