Williamsburg, NY – The Flushing Avenue bike lane is a win-win situation for the Brooklyn Department of Transportation and elected officials, according to its advocates. The city has abandoned its earlier plan to convert Flushing Avenue to a one-way street to accommodate a two-way bike lane. The new design will maintain two-way car flow, yet still provide for a bike lane.

This new proposal maintains two-way traffic between Kent Avenue and Navy Street, as well as adds a two-way protected bike lane east of Washington Avenue.
“As an advocate for compromise, I am pleased that the new plan for Flushing Avenue is satisfactory to both drivers and bikers. I want to commend Council Member [Letitia] James for leading the discussion and negotiations for the new plan,” said Councilmember Stephen Levin.“
The Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway initiative, which is overseen by the Department of Transportation, has developed a plan that pleases all parties involved. Drivers and residents of the nearby Navy Yard area will not be forced to acquiesce to bikers and exit Flushing Avenue in one direction, as the original plan included. “Residents living around Flushing Avenue, and tenants of the Navy Yard who attended the recent public meeting were not content with the original bike lane proposal — because of the one-way street component. We are grateful that DOT has responded to their concerns,” said Council Member Letitia James.
im sooo happy about it, i cant imagine flushing to become a 1 way……. the traffic wouldve been unbarable.
thank you rabbi niederman for helping us all the time
Does anybody know of one neighborhood where the residents were happy with these idiotic bike lanes? “LET THEM GET THE HELL OUTA HERE TOGETHER WITH KING BLOOMBERG WE HAD ENOUGH”
Where’s Baruch Herzfeld? He usually is involved with this stuff?
“. .We should all think about biking wherever we can, whether to shul, beis medrash, shopping or mikvah.”
Have you ever tried to tell your wife to ride a bike to MealMart to shop eruv shabbos or to the mikvah motzi shabbos?? If you have and are still happily married, than you are are married to a true ashes chayil.
did anybody see the blueprint? I hope they will still keep the parking…
Special thanks to councilwomen Leticia jams and CB2 for helping our community, as you see it’s very important to participate at meetings like these, especially when it’s involved or affect our area.
Why are u guys so happy about this bike lanes, do u know that u loose 65 percent of the parking? Do u know that this will be a main route for the bikers? And do u know that more bike lanes mean more accidents and more traffic. And how many williamsburg residents ride a bike?
I live in williams burg and I’m a biking chasid and I must tell you its amazing, I have a nice car but only use it for long distance, if only more of us began biking the rest will follow its Healthy, Fun, economic, and what not. As long as we are addicted to our cars the bike lanes will only get worse, Join the biking community and all your hate for bike lanes will disappear with just your first bike run.
Seriously, I think someone needs to move upstate. Society does not owe you Shmiras aynayim, you owe it to yourself.
When was the last time you saw a williamsburg Hasidic women drive? If the men would get off their fat asses, maybe there would be less cases of obesity, heart disease, diabetes etc. Running local errands with a bike is not as scary as it sounds.
Thanks UJCare for their hard work to keep it as a two way
