CBSNewYork (http://cbsloc.al/WNpJcY) is reporting that the story–which included contributions from a political aide, a radio station, and a good samaritan–is being lauded as a prime example of the community cooperatives working tirelessly to help victims of the October storm.
The hurricane left Pavel Gertsman, 84, and his wife, 81, without power at their 601 Brightwater Court residence. Once power was restored, the Gertsmans, like thousands of other Sandy victims, received electric space heaters courtesy of the city.
While thankful for the help, the Gertsmans, who are on a fixed income, were shocked to see a staggering $150 increase on their average monthly bill.
Chaim Deutsch, an aide to Councilman Michael Nelson, caught wind of the Gertsman’s plight and cited them as an example of the ongoing problem on a 1010 WINS segment.
“It’s a community issue that people used the electric heaters, so it was something to bring out that when you use electric as opposed to gas, the price goes up,” said Deutsch.
New Jersey resident Diane Edwards heard the radio spot and ultimately stepped in to pay the Gertsman’s bill.
For most of us , sandy is in the rear view mirror , but to see people keep on helping others is a true kiddush hashem. Great job Chaim Deutch.
In the projects, they just stop paying the bills. :/
its a vicious cycle
