Homeless Man With Crack Pipe In Custody After Attack Of NYPD Chaplain

NEW YORK (VINnews) — A homeless man, who was found to be in posession of drugs, was arrested for the attack and attempted mugging of NYPD chaplain Rabbi Alvin Kass on Tuesday.

Police say that 39-year-old Rafael Diaz was arrested for the attack, and was subsequently charged with robbery and criminal possession of a controlled substance.

The attack took place at approximately 5:45 AM near West 107th Street and Riverside Drive in the Upper West Side on Tuesday.

According to reports, Diaz approached the 84-year-old Rabbi, and started going through his pockets while he demanded money, saying he was hungry. Ultimately, Kass’ wallet fell to the ground, and Diaz fled without taking anything.

Diaz was arrested approximately 11 hours later.

According to police, he was in possession of a crack pipe at the time of his arrest.
