The motive of the attack was unclear: There did not appear to have been a robbery and there was no evidence that the attack was related to election unrest.

Dara Abaei, a Los Angeles Iranian Jewish activist, told the Jewish Journal that he knew the victim through the local Persian Jewish community; he added that the family had lost their daughter eight years ago before losing their father, the stabbing victim. Abaei said that the Department for Homeland Security is involved in the case.

“The community is in shock,” Abaei said, adding that some in the community are concerned about potential unrest this week after riots occurred in the area a few months ago in the wake of George Floyd’s death. He also said that community in Pico-Robertson is on high alert.
