Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Herzog, who has dual American-Israel citizenship and lives in Jerusalem, traveled to Iran and toured well-known religious sites, which he posted pictures of on social media. His smooth entry into the country and seemingly carefree travel have raised eyebrows and led to speculation that he was on more than a pleasure trip.

According to sources, he used his American passport to obtain a travel visa. However Homayoun Samahih, who represents the Iranian Jewish community in Parliament, told the media that he was not aware of how Rabbi Herzog gained entry.

Israeli citizens are banned from traveling to Iran, ever since the 1979 revolution.

The Rabbi visited the Yusuf Abad synagogue in Tehran, a Jewish hospital in Tehran, and the Kever of Mordechai and Esther in Hamadan city.

Several social media users questioned how the Iranian regime could allow an Israeli Rabbi to travel freely in the Islamic country.

An Iranian newspaper, Keyhan, questioned whether Rabbi Herzog is with the Mossad.

Rabbi Herzog has refused to discuss with the media the reason behind his visit to Iran, but was not concerned about the media clips of him speaking Hebrew in the anti-Israel country.

The newspaper claimed that his frequent trips to Saudi Arabia and the fact that no action was taken against him in Israel despite his trip to Iran being forbidden under “Zionist regime laws,” attest to a security and/or political mission, rather than a sightseeing tour.

Even if he wasn’t on a spy mission this irresponsible article may endanger him if he travels in future.

Silly Article. It’s a lot of mikva chatter and speculations. If he was really of the Mossad, then you did a disservice by publishing it.

Who raised the questions?
Not the Iranians.
Not the Israelis.
So only the social media – doing what they do best – making up conspiracy theories, not doing any actual reporting.

News Flash! Iranians don’t hate Jews. Why do we seem to be the biggest proponents of demanding the conflating of Zionism with the Jewish People?

Careless, irresponsible headline and story (which should be removed or altered). If he was on a “secret Mission”, would he publicize it so much?

He is just acting like a Habad-Lubavitch Hasid (he has images of their last Rebbe behind him in some photos), those guys who love publicity, and seek and pursue it, as their late Rebbe instructed them, seeking a job.
