ISRAEL (VINnews) Hundreds of Charedi members of Peleg Yerushalayim blocked a major highway near Bnei Brak for several hours on Sunday, protesting the movement to end the draft exemption for Charedim.

Footage showed the protesters, mostly bochurim, blocking Route 4 near the Givat Shmuel interchange.

Some held signs reading, “We’ll go to jail over the army” and “We will die and not enlist.” Additionally, protestors shut down the light rail in Petach Tikvah.

Police forcefully removed the protesters to allow traffic through. One border policewoman was filmed aggressively kicking a protester sitting on the road.

Last month the government told the High Court that it needed more time to legislate a new draft law because of the ongoing war. It said it would outline what the law would include by March 24, and asked to have until the end of June to pass the law.

The court gave the state until March 24 to explain why it was not drafting Charedim as per the current law.

Since October 7, thousands of Charedim have attempted to enlist in the IDF, though many are still waiting to be processed, reportedly due to a backlog of enlistments.

This is one of the few times I totally support police brutality.
If they can spend all day outside the Yeshiva drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes & gossiping, they can serve in the military.

Why are these Buchirim in the streets running , screaming like Shkutzim? This is a Chilul Hashem . Why aren’t they sitting in Yeshiva and learning while their brothers are fighting for Israel, risking their lives for all of Israel. If Hamas, Chas V’Cholilah, invaded Benai Berak or their Yeshivah, who would save them. If they don’t want to serve, let them go to Europe or America, where antisemitism is raging like a fire and terrorists are attacking and killing Yidden. There are many Chareidim who signed up after Oct. 7, but still have not been processed to serve. Kol Hachovod to them. May Hashem protect all our Chaiyalim. They woke up after this terrible tragedy and want to defend their families and neighbors. It was the biggest sign up of Chareidim in decades. Those brave Chareidim who are serving now should come to the Yeshivas and talk to the Rebbes, the parents, the Minahalim; explain why they signed up. These are horrible times for Yidden all over the world. These demonstrations are wrong at this time in Israel. This is no way to create Achdus. It upsets me to see these demonstrations as much as it upsets me to see the Naturei Karta marching with the Fakestinians. They are Amalek and they want dead Jews. We save lives and we have to live. We haven’t replaced our families who were murdered in the Shoah by Hitler and his collaborators, also Amalekim. We need to fight to live.

If they want to go to jail…well regular jail is not fun…the judge could force them to do work sevice and they will have no choice…cus there is someone from the IPS checking that you are actually there.

On the other hand…why not give them other options like go volunteer at a hospital…

This protest is tone deaf, and frankly shameful.

Israel is in a state of war.

So many young people have died. I would be against mandatory military service for a whole other reason -mainly, that the govt is sometimes ready for soldiers to be put at risk, rather than use aerial bombing, in order to placate america.

That being said, one can be against military conscription without this horrible spectactle. I am sure many in the police clearing up the highway have lost friends; I can imagine that this would be personal to them.

All these idiots protesters are doing are stirring hate and division amongst the Jewish people.

This is so tone deaf! Where is the leadership to steer these kids back on the benches learning where they belong.

I am so ashamed.

They should be allowed to learn, and then have to serve IDF or national service, or no Government benefits what so ever forever.

Why don’t their rebbes come with them to stage these illegal sit-ins? If you want to play a man’s game then you have to be prepared to pay a man’s price. The sit-ins will end promptly if a light-rail vehicles is used to run over one of these certificated idiots – regardless of their age. The right of way will be reclaimed in short order.

Ignorant children taught by fools. “From twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel”, Bamidbar perek Aleph. The draft dodging ends now, the hiding behind the words of Torah that are disrespected ends now. Or put them into prison with Palestinians.

If the govt pushes any kind of silly draft this will become hugely widespread to the point of Israel not being able to function. Furthermore, the NYT had article today that claimed, charedi support for the army is sky high since Oct 7. There are things charedim are doing now that they never did in the past including a high uptick in enrollment. Do we want to kill it via a draft ? Or do we work with the sentiment and slowly nudge them more and more? You decide which method will be more successful
