ST. LOUIS — Chaim Bloom, the Shabbat-observant former Boston Red Sox executive, was announced Tuesday as the new president of baseball operations for the St. Louis Cardinals. The move comes as the team looks to rebound after missing the playoffs for three of the past four seasons.

Bloom, a Jewish day school alum and Yale graduate, previously spent 15 years with the Tampa Bay Rays and nearly four years as Boston’s chief baseball officer. During his tenure with the Red Sox, he rebuilt the farm system and implemented sustainable financial strategies, though his time in Boston was marked by fan frustration and instances of antisemitism. Bloom keeps kosher, observes Shabbat, and has maintained a jar of gefilte fish in his office, reflecting his commitment to Jewish values.
In a 2021 interview with the Jewish Journal, Bloom emphasized that “family and responsibility to the world around us are central values that guide my life and work,” highlighting the balance between his faith and his professional career.
Taking over a Cardinals squad that finished 78-84, Bloom confirmed that manager Oli Marmol would remain in place while he evaluates potential roster moves, including the futures of veterans Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray, and Willson Contreras. “We’re not where we want to be,” Bloom said. “Our goal is to compete for the division and a World Series every year.”
Bloom’s appointment marks a significant moment for Jewish representation in professional sports leadership, blending baseball expertise with a strong foundation of integrity and values.
“Bloom keeps… a jar of gefilte fish in his office, reflecting his commitment to Jewish values. ” Doubtful an actual human would write such sillyness.
His first job should have been to fire. Our stupid manager.
He would have been a lot better off on the cardinals fan side by doing so. They’ve been calling for this guy’s resignation for 3 years.
The only way to help them would be to bring back Stan Musial and Bob Gibson
