(Yannis Behrakis/Reuters)Jerusalem – Officials in the defense establishment denied on Tuesday evening reports that they had recommended to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to suspend military operations for 48 hours and during that time to review a number of possible ceasefire solutions for the conflict in Gaza.

Earlier it was reported that the defense stablishment recommendeded that Israel use the suspension of operations to carefully study Hamas’s intentions; whether the group was planning to escalate the violence by renewing attacks inside the country or whether it would opt to stop its rocket attacks against the South altogether.

It was possible that Operation Cast Lead, the massive bombardment since Saturday of Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, had already made clear to Hamas that the “rules of the game” had changed and that Israel will no longer tolerate rocket fire against its civilians.

A commentator on Israel’s Channel 10 said Defense Minister Ehud Barak and IDF Chief of General Staff Gabi Ashkenazi both supported the initiative to suspend action for 48 hours.

The IDF spokesperson denied recommending a temporary ceasefire.

as the situation developes it seems to mimic the second lebanon war, where israel backed out without acheiving it’s goal.

They need to carefully study Hamas’s intentions? Their intentions atre very clear, that they will rain rockets into Israel if allowed. No need to hold a Chelemer Asifeh for this.

Doesn’t make any sense any lay person can gather that. They have to be wiped out, or it will just continue again. Or they will cease fire long enough to come back stronger. Any truces, is just a farce on hamas’ part.

Israel should not have a cease fire for even a small period of time. They should take the initiative and continue their actions to DESTROY Hamas and anyone that stands in their way. They should be strong and not back down. BE STRONG.

Why go through all the effort of figuring out their INTENTIONS we should rather deal with their ACTIONS which is targeting inoccent civilions flat out…
Besides; giving them now breating space when their on the run will only serve to regroup their roitzchim & smuggle out their leaders into a safe heaven which is all the want to protect their own ugly skin they couldn’t care less about their civilian brothers & children being bombed on the streets just the opposite its serves their purposs of crying KOZAK HANIGZAL well…

    So let on those bombs…

being in eretz Israel, I know first hand that we should not stop. we have given them too many opportunities to change and they haven’t. we need to show them a lesson and show who we truly are, the nation of G-d.

Bush got Israel in this mess to begin with. He pressured Israel to give Gaza back and he encourage the Arabs to hold an election after everyone warned him not to including Israel because Hamas was going to gain control.

Why stop? Oil is low now and inventories are high. Abbas and Mubarek don’t want to deal with Hamas either. The incoming EU president, granted it’s symbolic, is not blasting Israel. Bush and Condi aren’t. Lord Obama is silent playing golf in Hawaii. The stock market would love to put this to a rest.

I read certain Rabbinic authorities in Israel gave the green light for attacking Hamas if they are surrounded among civilians.

Finish the job. The Sharon administration created this mess by leaving Gaza. Olmert embarrassed Israel with his follies in Lebanon. Yad Kasheh and get it over with.

This is only propaganda by hamas supporters to coax Israel into a false ceasfire. It is clearly muslim doctrine to agree to all treaties until the time when the enemy can be defeated

if we stop now were asking for a repeat of the second Lebanon war. in my opinion they should have gone in already. Hamas sees everything thats goin on by the border and has had now 4 days to booby trap were ever they think they’ll make initial contact with.

We must, as counter-intuitive as it seems allow for the cease fire, because the terrorists cannot stop firing their missiles into Israel while under constant bombardment. They need some “breathing room”, and a respite in order to stop.
I don’t understand it, but the media is explaining it this way., In other words we demand they stop, but won’t physically let them take their finger off the launch button, while bombing them. Someone explain how this works. All I can come up with (and i don’t believe it) is that bombs falling on their heads means that they can’t think straight, and the activity is so feverish that they are incapable of rational thought processes (can’t hear themselves think) . Let them have some moments of silence, and they will think it out logically, and come to the rational conclusion to stop launching into Israel. Pure Nonsense- but this is whats coming out of the “Quartet”, the UN, and especially Ireland, who has called for complete disengagement with Israel on all levels.
