SUFFERN (VINnews) — Two men have been arrested for the damage and removal of an Israeli flag from the wall of Ramapo Town Hall.
After an investigation, the Ramapo Police Department identified a group of people who had torn the flag down, damaged it, and took it.
Police arrested Alter Goldberger, 75, of Monroe, and Yehonatan Ovadia, 32 of Chestnut Ridge, and they have been charged with hate crimes.
According to the Monsey Scoop, the two suspects, in addition to other members of the group of vandals who have not yet been arrested, are members of the Neturei Karta extremist group.
Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht said the arrests demonstrated that the town will not tolerate the suppression of the viewpoints of any group. .
He said the town received phone calls from activists opposed to the State of Israel after putting up the flag.
“Along with many other municipalities in our county and throughout the United States, we placed the flag there to show solidarity with the Israeli people after the heinous atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists on October 7,” Specht said. “While everyone is entitled to an opinion about this situation, no one has the right to steal or damage property to express their opinion or attempt to silence ours.”
The town has reportedly replaced the missing flag with an even larger one.
