JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Despite the negative media attention given to Bnei Brak in the wake of the rioting which followed aggressive police action to enforce health regulations in the city, there are still people who love and respect the residents of the town and realize that their name has been wrongly tarnished by the actions of a few individuals.

Rikki Levitt, a social activist from the south of Israel, decided to act on her feeling that Bnei Brak residents were being scapegoated and organized a large shipment of tons of vegetables to large families in Bnei Brak. Levitt told Kikar Hashabat that she was motivated by “selfless love (Ahavat Chinam) for the residents of Bnei Brak,” and the Negev farmers  who contributed wished to raise the morale of the Bnei Brak residents who had suffered from delegitimization and demonization in the media.

“I am not Chareidi”, Levitt said “but it hurt me that people are blackening the name of an entire community due to a few extremists. Chareidi society is a quality group engaged in kind actions, a disciplined society which contributes to the Jewish people in Israel in its own way. This was our way of transmitting a message of selfless love.”

Levitt added that “I felt that I couldn’t sleep at night after the police brutality employed against local residents. I said to myself “what’s the connection between Bnei Brak and this? I just picked up the phone to farmers and got them to do something good for residents who were very moved by the gesture.”
